What is maternal mental health?
Maternal mental health (sometimes called reproductive mental health) encompasses the psychological, emotional and behavioral health of a woman in her childbearing and child rearing years. That means any challenges a woman may face while trying to get pregnant, during pregnancy, postpartum, or any time thereafter while raising her children fall into this category.
The issues we most often work with that fall under this umbrella include:
Infertility
Miscarriage and termination
Infant loss
Mood changes in pregnancy
Postpartum depression and anxiety
Parenting
